St. Joseph’s CBS Nenagh wins the Regional Final of Applied Maths Competition
Applied Maths Success

The top second-level Applied Maths students from Tipperary, Limerick and Clare gathered at Crescent College in Limerick on Thursday evening 5th March, for the Regional Final of Irish Applied Maths Teachers’ Association (IAMTA) Annual Competition.

The competition is based on a Table Quiz format. Students work in teams of three solving eight rounds of problems. Each team can consist of at most two Leaving Certificate students and one student from Fifth Year. At each round, teams are given three problems to be solved within a time limit of six minutes. Problems are designed to be sufficiently difficult so that all the students must participate actively, no one/two students could solve all the problems within the time limit. Problems are based on the Higher Level Leaving Certificate Applied Maths Syllabus and are devised jointly by teachers of the IAMTA and professors from Third level institutions.

St. Joseph’s CBS Nenagh had a total of three teams competing in the competition. The team consisting of Pádraig Cody, Paul Ryan and Joseph Cunningham were declared the overall winners on the night having led the competition from start to finish. They now progress to the National Finals which will take place in Athlone Institute of Technology on Saturday 28th March.

We had two other teams who performed very well also on the night. One team consisted of Amal Maharaj, Sergiu Mereacre and Seán Duggan. The other team consisted of John O’ Meara, Liam Hayes and Jayden Mc Gee. The boys enjoyed preparing for the competition and stated it was very good revision of the Leaving Certificate Applied Maths Course.
