Busy Week for CBS debating Team.

St. Joseph's CBS Nenagh's debating team had an engaging and stimulating week taking part in three different competitions in the past week. On the agenda was the Trinity College’s annual Philosophical Society's Speaks Mace Schools' Debating competition on Saturday the 24th, The Nenagh Lions Club inaugural inter-schools public speaking competition on Friday the 23rd and the UCC Philosophical Society Schools Debating competition on Tuesday night.

Fifth Year students Tom Hanrahan, Jayden Guilfoyle, Harry Sheppard, Oisín Wallace, Seamus Creagh and Kevin O’ Reilly represented the school in Trinity College. The boys were divided into three teams and debated against Dublin schools’ teams on interesting motions such as ‘This House prefers a benevolent dictatorship over a weak democracy’ to name but a few. The boys won several debates throughout the day and found it be both an enjoyable and challenging event. The team were accompanied by debating mentors Ms. Alison Collins and Ms. Helena O’Gorman. As the only school from Munster the boys were praised for their ability and commitment.

On Friday four of our debating team succeeded in winning the Lions Club Perpetual Cup Schools Public Speaking Competition. Donnacha Gleeson, Oisín Wallace, Adam Carroll and Tom Wallace competed against St Mary's Secondary Nenagh in the Nenagh Lions Club inaugural inter-schools public speaking competition at Tipperary County Council’s chamber. Adam Carroll accepted the trophy on behalf of his excellent team.

Also this week two of our debating teams won their debates in the Quarter Final stage of the UCC Philosophical Society Schools Debating competition on Tuesday night. Both teams are now through to the Semi-final. Jayden Guilfoyle and Robert Duggan were on one winning team, while Adam Carroll and Darragh O'Leary made up the other winning team.

Three other teams: Tom Hanrahan & Oisín Wallace; Ian Shanahan & Seamus Creagh; Donnacha Gleeson & Harry Sheppard, participated and performed very well on the night but didn’t progress to the Semi Final.

Well done to all of our speakers throughout the week, they represented themselves and the school so well. A special thanks to their mentors and debating coaches Ms. Alison Collins and Ms. Helena O Gorman who helped students prepare for the competitions.
