St Francis' History class in 2nd Year were treated to a wealth of knowledge by the wonderful Kevin Whelan last week when they went on a walking history tour in Nenagh, beginning at the courthouse and ending at the top of the incredible Nenagh castle! The weather was in our favour as Kevin , in his wonderful storytelling manner brought the history of the town to life! The students (and the teacher!) learned about faction fights on the streets of Nenagh in the 1800s, deportations of young local men to Australia at the end of the Crimean War for looking for what was owed to them by the British army, a local woman being deported to Australia for being drunk on the street, another for stealing a spool of thread. We were informed of the five Kennedy clan members being beheaded and their heads placed on spikes at the castle walls, of the man who killed Michael Collins coming to live and settle in Nenagh town and the ties of Nenagh to Olympic champions. It was a fascinating and enjoyable whistle stop tour of Nenagh.
